Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla called on Commonwealth parliamentarians, on Thursday (October 9, 2025), to promote the responsible and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) while addressing the digital divide through technology.
Chairing a session on ‘Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Digital Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide’ at the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference, held in Barbados, Mr. Birla said that cooperation and knowledge-sharing can make technology a bridge rather than a barrier.
The Lok Sabha Speaker highlighted how AI-based digital systems are enhancing India’s parliamentary processes, making them more efficient and inclusive, and cited innovations like AI-enabled translation, e-libraries, and speech-to-text reporting.
Mr. Birla also announced that real-time AI systems such as, such as Sansad Bhashini, will soon enable MPs to communicate in their native languages, thereby strengthening democratic engagement in India’s diverse society.
Noting that democracy thrives when people connect deeply with their parliament, the Lok Sabha Speaker stressed citizens’ participation. Mr. Birla discussed the ‘Digital Sansad’ initiative, which provides an integrated and unified platform for MPs, ministries, and citizens for greater responsiveness.
Lauding India’s digital milestones under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Mr. Birla highlighted the rapid rollout of 5G and the UPI payments revolution
