The European Commission has approved the acquisition of food delivery giant Just Eat Takeaway by South Africa’s multi-billion-euro tech group Naspers.
Just Eat Takeaway, Europe’s second-largest online food delivery platform after Delivery Hero, is headquartered in the Netherlands and has orange-clad couriers delivering under brands including Just Eat, Takeaway, Lieferando and Thuisbezorgd.
On Monday, the Commission approved Naspers’ purchase of Just Eat Takeaway through its investment arm Prosus but ordered it to “significantly reduce” its stake in Berlin-based Delivery Hero, where it is currently the largest shareholder with 27,4 percent of shares.
The EU executive said this would ensure both companies remained independent competitors.
Naspers has said it aims to create “a European food delivery champion” powered by AI.
