GitHub has announced Agent HQ, an open ecosystem for developers to have access to coding agents from third parties including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Cognition, xAI and others. The AI agents will become available directly on GitHub within the coming months as a part of the GitHub Copilot subscription.
Users will have a single command center to assign, steer and track AI agents. “And is backed by enterprise-grade functionality: a new generation of agentic code review, a dedicated control plane to govern AI access and agent behavior, and a metrics dashboard to understand the impact of AI on a developer’s work,” a release shared by GitHub said.
In Agent HQ, developers will also be able to run specialised AI agents in parallel to each other as they perform complex tasks.
The same capabilities for mission control will also be available via VS Code.
There’s also a new tool called Plan Mode in VS Code which allows coders to work with Copilot in a step-by-step approach for their task while asking questions.
Developers will also be able to review code quality with the GitHub Code Quality, which is in public preview now.
Starting this week, Copilot Pro plus users will have access to OpenAI Codex too in VS Code Insiders, the first of their third-party partner agents.
“Agent HQ isn’t about the hype of AI. It’s about the reality of shipping code. It’s about bringing order and governance to this new era without compromising choice. It’s about giving you the power to build faster, with more confidence, and on your terms,” said Kyle Daigle, COO, GitHub.
