Google on Tuesday (September 17, 2025) announced an open payments protocol for transactions on agentic payment systems. Called Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), the system is supported by more than 60 companies including American Express, Mastercard, Revolut, Coinbase, Paypal, Etsy, Salesforce and Inuit.
Using this protocol, AI agents will eventually be able to shop on behalf of customers while interacting with retail agents.
“The agent can then interact with both airline and hotel agents, as well as online travel agencies and booking platforms, and once it finds a combination that fits the budget, it can execute both cryptographically-signed bookings simultaneously,” the blog posted by Google stated.
The protocol will also support agents to make purchases by generating a cart mandate when they find an item. The mandate will define the price range and time of purchase so it can be audited in case of fraud.
“We are committed to evolving this protocol in an open, collaborative process, including through standards bodies, and invite the entire payments and technology community to build this future with us,” Stavan Parikh and Rao Surapaneni, VPs at Google and Google Cloud, noted.
The company has also partnered with crypto companies like Coinbase, MetaMask and the Ethereum foundation to offer an extension that allows AI transactions from crypto wallets.
